The ROI of AI Call Handling: Real Numbers from Real Jamaican Businesses

Written by Michelle Goss · Dec 30, 2025 · 6 min read

We surveyed 50 WOCOM AI customers across Jamaica to measure the real business impact of AI call handling. The results exceeded expectations.

The Numbers

Business metrics

85% reduction in missed calls — Before AI, businesses missed an average of 12 calls per day. After, just 2.

60% cost reduction — Replacing a dedicated receptionist with AI saved an average of J$45,000/month per business.

23% increase in lead capture — AI captured caller details that would have been lost to voicemail, which most callers don't leave.

Customer Feedback

"We were skeptical, but WOCOM AI captured 3 new clients in the first week alone. Each worth over J$200,000 in annual revenue." — Kingston law firm

"Our after-hours calls used to go to voicemail. Now the AI handles them and texts us the details. We close deals at 10 PM." — Montego Bay real estate agency

How to calculate the return for your own business

The figures above are self-reported by surveyed customers and will not match every business. The useful exercise is running the arithmetic on your own numbers, which takes about fifteen minutes and needs only your call logs.

Step 1 — count what you are actually missing. Your phone system reports unanswered calls. Pull a full month, and separate calls that rang out during business hours from those that arrived after close. Both are lost, for different reasons.

Step 2 — establish what a call is worth. Take your average sale value and multiply it by the proportion of enquiries that become customers. A business with a J$40,000 average sale converting one enquiry in five is looking at roughly J$8,000 of expected value per genuine enquiry.

Step 3 — discount honestly. Not every missed call is a lost sale. Some are existing customers who will ring back, some are suppliers, some are wrong numbers. Assume a conservative share are genuine new enquiries — a third is a defensible starting point — and that a portion of those would have called back anyway.

Step 4 — compare against the cost of answering them. Set the recovered value against what it costs to capture those calls: the AI receptionist package, or the fully-loaded cost of additional staff coverage including statutory contributions and leave.

A worked example

Purely to show the shape of the calculation — substitute your own figures:

  • Missed calls in a month: 60
  • Genuine new enquiries among them, at one third: 20
  • Of those, the share that would not have called back, at 60%: 12
  • Expected value per enquiry: J$8,000
  • Monthly value recovered: J$96,000

Against that, the AI receptionist Starter package is included with every Cloud PBX system, so for most small businesses the recovered value is compared against nothing at all. The arithmetic only becomes a genuine decision at higher call volumes, where a larger package is required.

What the numbers do not capture

Two effects sit outside the calculation and both favour answering. Callers who reach a person or a competent AI on the first attempt form a materially better impression than those who reach voicemail, and that shows up in reviews and referrals rather than in the call log. Working in the other direction, staff freed from interrupting their work to answer the phone recover time that never appears as revenue but is real.

Where AI call handling does not pay back

It is worth being straight about this. If your call volume is genuinely low — a handful of calls a week, all of which get answered — there is nothing to recover, and the honest answer is that you do not need it yet. If your calls are highly technical from the first sentence, an AI that has to hand off almost every call adds a step rather than removing one. And if your missed calls are concentrated in a single predictable hour, a change to your staffing rota may solve it more cheaply.

The businesses that see the strongest return are those with steady enquiry volume, a meaningful value per customer, and calls arriving outside the hours anyone is available — which describes a large share of Jamaican small businesses, but not all of them.
